Escolas Dr. João Araújo Correia

The school João de Araújo Correia is located in Douro, city of Régua, in Portugal, Tras-os-Montes. Régua is a small city with 16 thousand inhabitants, with one secondary, preparatory, primary school and one vocational school. It's major economic activities consist in tourism and the production and trade of wine. Despite these economic activities, it’s left with no prospects of professional careers or jobs, and low salaries expectations. As a result, there is a strong migration tendency. Thus the need for the development of 21st century skills as an attempt to give the students the opportunity to achieve success in the job market. The school center João de Araújo Correia has about 2000 students, 120 teachers, from 4 -19. It includes 4 professional courses in its curricula: multimedia, management technicians, geriatrics, and sports technicians. There are also 4 general courses: Humanities, Social Sciences, Visual Arts and Economics. The building is almost new because about 6 years ago the Ministry of Education renovated it. Now it has a media projector in each classroom, and each lesson is in a computer program. This has allowed to introduce new teaching approaches as well which are mainly student-centred. Moreover the school is striving for a change namely by being involved in European partnerships that are providing a new approach on diversity and tolerance, which are distinctive marks of the Communitarian profile, and are equipping its students with linguistic and sociolinguistic competences which will enable them to better face present and future challenges. There are also sundry ongoing projects like Young Business Talents, Financial Education, Consumer Classroom, Education Consumption, and a project about Ecology divided into various sub projects such as knowledge of biodiversity, healthy eating, sustainable development, laundry recycling, clothes re-arrangements and so on. Locally the institute has several partnerships with both the University (UTAD), the Town Hall, and above all with the local Museum, which is unique in the world and it contributes to spreading knowledge about the cultural heritage. For the above specified characteristics the school will be able to contribute to the project. The school has a very stable board of Teachers. It's not easy to change from one school to another mainly for a staff that have twenty or more years of service. The key persons involved in the project are History, Philosophy, IT and English teachers who have already implemented several projects on local, national and European levels. They are very creative and open-minded people, who see the need for change and want to encourage their students to take initiative. They are particularly interested in increasing their pupils’ critical thinking skills by innovative, creative and effective teaching methods.
